Stargazing in Medebach

Since the autumn of 2007, a special private observatory has been located just outside the centre of Medebach: the Caspar-Vopelius Sternwarte.

Although the initiative is private, the observatory is open to visitors. Individuals, families, school groups, and youth groups can participate in guided tours and observation evenings.

What can you see in the sky?

Depending on the season and weather conditions, the following celestial bodies and phenomena can be observed:

The moon (except around full moon)

Planets and their moons

Possibly visible comets

The Sun (during the day), including sunspots and flares

Star clusters, nebulae, regions where new stars are being formed and supernova remnants

Distant galaxies beyond our Milky Way

Best time to visit

For the best observing experience, it's recommended to visit around the new moon, as the sky is at its darkest then, making distant objects more visible. Clear weather is another prerequisite, of course, because unlike a planetarium, everything here revolves around live observation under the open sky.

While this requires spontaneous planning, you can use the current observation times listed on the Medebach Touristik website ( see here ) or keep an eye on social media! Registration is easy and can be made late in the evening by phone at 01520 / 7212165. You can also send a message via the website waldhofhochsauerland.de.
